Envelope filter interface - ctd
The two-control interface to this envelope filter seems to have worked out pretty well. There's two controls - sensitivity and start point. Sensitivity pans - from minimum to maximum - between the 'traditional' up and down-drive filter sounds. At extreme setttings the control is at maximum sensitivity, whereas around the middle the filter doesn't respond to dynamics at all, providing a fixed-filter sound. Start point sets the 'start' of the filter sweep, whether that be upwards, downwards or static (if the sensitivity control is set to dead-centre or 12 o'clock). I think it's quite a simple and intuitive system; I've made a couple of prototypes for local musicians to get some more feedback from 'typical users'.
Two controls perhaps doesn't allow for enough flexibility for some, so on the prototypes I made some other parameters (envelope attack, envelope decay, envelope detector sensitivity, filter resonance) adjustable via trimpots. This design is intended to be very simple and quick to adjust in use, but it's also nice to have at least the option of shaping the sound a bit more.
All going well with prototyping, and assuming I'm happy with the final sound and operation, this device will be for sale soon. Then I can concentrate on another (re)-design I've been thinking about for several years...
